Placenta Encapsulation

Apex Midwifery offers Placenta Encapsulation in Pueblo, CO and surrounding areas.

You do not need to be working with Apex Midwifery as a midwife or birth doula client to request this service.

The most modern and noninvasive way to consume the placenta is placenta encapsulation.

During and after a normal vaginal delivery (including postpartum bleeding) a new parent may lose up to 1/10 of her body’s blood supply. With surgical births or postpartum hemorrhage, blood loss can be significantly more. Losing a large amount of blood/iron so quickly can cause anemia, which can lead to fatigue, weakness, and exhaustion. The blood needs high supplies of iron to carry oxygen to the cells for healing and for overall energy. Ingestion of the placenta can benefit the new parent by supplying rich iron, amino acids, and essential fats which is believed to be the perfect replenishment following the miracle of birth.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • This is totally up to the birthing person. A few of the most common things done with a placenta are to have it encapsulated for ingestion, save it to plant under a special tree or flower bed outside, or dispose of it. This is something that will be discussed before the birth occurs so you will have time to research options and decide what is best for you.

**If a birth occurs in the hospital and the placenta is sent to pathology, it is not able to be processed for encapsulation.

  • Each person's needs are different after giving birth, and placenta encapsulation provides different opportunities and benefits based on the physical needs of the individual’s body.

During pregnancy, the body carries an increased amount of hormones and when the baby is born those hormone levels that sustain the pregnancy dramatically decrease around the third or fourth day postpartum. This is referred to as the hormonal drop off. Research suggests that this event may be partially responsible for baby blues and postpartum mood disorders. The placenta contains all of those hormones that were flowing through the body during pregnancy and can benefit the new parent by providing a gentle, gradual decrease in hormone levels instead of that dramatic drop off. The most important nutrients found in rich supply in the placenta include Stem Cells and Growth Factors such as iron, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin E, oxytocin, cytokines, corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH).

Taking placenta pills has also shown to support breast milk production, aid in a positive breastfeeding experience, boost energy levels, and also may help reduce the length of time of postpartum bleeding.

  • You do not need to be working with me as a midwife/doula to request placenta encapsulation services. This service can be requested by anyone with any provider. Clients who have hired Taylor for midwifery/doula services are eligible for a placenta encapsulation discount following the birth of their baby. Follow the instructions to submit the Placenta release form, ensure proper storage, and communication with Taylor.

  • The placenta is encapsulated in a vegan capsule containing vegetable cellulose. Depending on the size of the placenta, you can expect to get 80-200 capsules that you can take as long as you need during your postpartum time. Specific ingestion instructions are included with the placenta encapsulation package.

  • Cleanliness and sterilization are of utmost priority when handling placentas and encapsulation equipment for the consumer and the handler. All equipment used is cleaned and sterilized immediately after use and properly stored to be used the next time. Only one placenta can be handled and processed at a time to prevent any contamination.
